The heavy rains that hit the archipelago of Madeira on 20 February was caused by a combination of meteorological factors which, combined with the rugged terrain of the island, unloaded 132 mm of rain in 12 hours in Funchal. In Arieiro Peak, fell 185 litres/m2 of water, a value that exceeds about 40 times the annual average daily. The disaster is translated by the following official figures:
The loss of 42 invaluable lives
The desperation of 600 homeless
The disappearance of millions in none protected assets
It is in this context, and carrying out our MISSION, that is based the development of this initiative to raise funds for the purchase of a WEATHER RADAR, and its WARNING SYSTEM, which could make all the difference in the prediction of weather disasters such as the one that recently affected the autonomous region of Madeira. The action is supported by the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics.
